Part of showing God’s love to others begins with believing that you are worthy of receiving that love. Some say that God’s gift of love to us is the best and most important gift that we could ever receive. Can you accept that you are loved even as an imperfect human being? Can you forgive yourself?
Here are 8 simple ways to show God’s love to others on a day-to-day basis.
Send A Note
Long gone are the days when we used to receive a handwritten note. In an age of texting and digital communications it seems rare and really special to receive something, like a handwritten note, that took time and care to create. Let someone know that you are thinking about them and leave them a surprise note in a special place, like on their desk at work or on the bathroom mirror at home. A little goes a long way in showing that you care.
Drop off Dessert
Make your favorite dessert and drop it off at someone’s house. Sweet treats are nice and everyone loves a homemade baked good, especially if it is a recipe that runs in the family tradition. Liberty Church said, “Spread the love even further and drop off a small plate of cookies to a few different families.” Consider leaving a cute note like, “God loves you and so do I” on the plate if they aren’t there.
Getting a simple text that says, “Thinking of you,” is often enough to make someone smile. Sharing God’s love doesn’t have to be complicated; in fact, it is often times the most beautiful when it is natural and when it is something that you actually want to do. Take 5 minutes out of your day to let someone know you care.
Send Fresh Flowers
Who doesn’t love to receive fresh flowers? Flowers are a wonderful example of God’s beautiful creativity in this world. Sending a bouquet of flowers to someone’s home or office as a “Just Because!” will go a long way in showing that you care. It’s the simple pleasures in life, like getting a dozen fragrant and beautiful roses, that make each day really special.
Go Out of Your Way
You’ve heard the phrase that kindness keeps on giving. You’ve seen the movie, “Pay it Forward,” but have you tried it? Ignite a series of random acts of kindness by doing one small thing for a stranger. Go out of your way to buy someone’s gas or meal at the fast food drive thru. Open a door for an elderly woman or offer to go to the grocery store for your neighbor. By taking a little time out of your day and giving it to someone else, you can show that you care.
Look into someone’s eyes and smile. In an age where we’re all looking down at our smartphones or are looking into a screen, we are losing more and more opportunities to make eye contact with each other. Be intentional about noticing those around you. Take time to look into their eyes and smile at them. One way of showing that God is love is to literally be God’s love. Give a hug, give a smile, share the love.
Volunteer to do something special for someone.
Mow your neighbor’s lawn, trim your mom’s shrubs, wash your dad’s car, do a load of laundry, clean the house, etc. The list goes on and on! Whatever your gift is, share it with those around you! It doesn’t have to be this huge, all day event; you can give an hour of your time and that will be more than enough for most people!
Perhaps the most important thing that anyone can do each day is just to “show up” and sit with the people in our days. When was the last time you really listened to someone? Try giving your full attention to someone by setting aside all distractions. For starters, try turning off your phone and allow yourself to just be with the beautiful person sitting across from you. You’ll be surprised at how good this feels.
