5 Ways To Protect Your Skin This Summer

The skin is the body’s largest organ. It it the organ that gets exposed to various outside elements, including the sun. As a living organ that is susceptible to damage from the sun, various measures must be take to prevent it. Here are some things that you can do to protect your skin from sun.

Wear Sunscreen

Sunscreen is one of your best defenses against the sun. Sunscreens come in the form of sprays, gels, lotions and waxes. They are made of chemical mixtures. The inorganic compounds found in sunscreens are able to scatter or reflect the sun’s rays. The organic compounds that are found are able to absorb the rays so that one’s skin doesn’t. Inorganic chemicals generally include chemicals such as zinc dioxide and titanium dioxide. Organic chemicals found in sunscreens include oxybenzone and avobenzone.

There are two types of rays that come out of the sun: UVA and UVB. The SPF rating on a bottle of sunscreen refers to a measurement of how well it blocks against UVB rays. There are measurements of how well products protect against UVA rays. UVB rays are the rays that burn skin and give people skin cancer. UVA rays are the rays that produce age spots and premature wrinkles.

If you wear sunscreen, you should read the directions on the container to see how often you should reapply it, as well as how long you should wait between applying it and going out in the sun. Improper use of sunscreen can render it less effective or useless.

Cover Your Skin

Some people may find it counter intuitive to cover up when it is hotter and sunnier outside. However, it is actually a lot better to cover up than to dress skimpily because clothing protects skin from the sun.
Something to consider is the fact that some clothes protect skin better than others. Generally, darker and thicker fabrics are better at protecting skin! It is pretty tempting to show as much skin as possible, both for fashion and because it is hot out. However, you will be doing your skin a favor if you cover it up!

There are even some brands that claim to make UV resistant clothing. It is worthwhile to check out these brands and to read people’s reviews about them.

Wear A Hat

Wearing a hat is another way to protect yourself against the sun. The scalp is very vulnerable because it is facing toward the sky. Wearing a hat will definitely protect it. Also, Wearing a hat is great because hats bring protective shade to people’s faces. The only problem is if you wear a hat, part of your face still might not be shaded from the sun. This is why you have to think long and hard about which hat to get. If you get a hat with a shorter brim, you may find that everything below the bridge of your nose is not shaded from the sun.

Sit In The Shade

Sitting in the shade helps a lot when it comes to protecting yourself against the sun’s rays. Being in shade is a lot better than being directly in the sun. However, be careful of the fact that not all shady areas are the same. For example, even if you sit in a shady area, UVB rays may indirectly hit you by reflecting from various surfaces.

Go Out During Certain Times Of Day

How weak or strong the sun is depends on the time of day. Some people say that the hours between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm have the strongest sun rays. Some people say 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, while others say 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. It is also important to note when the sun rises and sets. Perhaps an evening or early morning walk is the best thing for your skin.

If you want to protect your skin against the sun, you should sit in the shade, meticulously plan out which time of day you go out, wear hats, cover up and wear sunscreen. Doing these things will result in a smaller risk of having skin problems from the sun.
