4 Reasons Your Corvette Needs a Supercharger NOW


Of all cars made in America, the Corvette is arguably the coolest. Although those auto enthusiasts who love the Ford Mustang may differ, there is no doubt the Corvette has a special place in American automotive history. Whether you own an early model or one of today’s high-tech Corvettes, there is no doubt one of the things you love most about your car is the power underneath the hood. However, as those who have the need for speed know all too well, you can never have too powerful an engine. This is particularly true of those owning a Corvette, since one of the biggest thrills of having these cars is the ability to ride down the highway as fast as possible. If you are ready to do so but want even more horsepower under the hood, here are four reasons why your Corvette needs a supercharger.

Increased Horsepower

As mentioned earlier, you can never have too much horsepower under the hood of your Corvette. For those who install a supercharger on their Corvette, they can expect to gain on average between 30-50 percent additional horsepower. In fact, once a supercharger is installed on a Corvette, your vehicle will essentially be powered the same way as most large airplanes. Since a supercharger draws power directly from the engine and relies on a compressor to blow pressurized air into the combustion chamber of the engine, it functions much like an airplane engine in that it allows for higher performance for longer periods of time, all the while without a loss of power.

Easy to Service and Maintain

Unlike turbochargers, superchargers are much easier to service and maintain once installed on a Corvette. If you choose to install a turbocharger on your Corvette, plan on it taking much more time and costing quite a bit more along the way. When a turbocharger is installed on an engine, it requires a large amount of modification to the engine, which costs time and money. However, when a supercharger is used, the process becomes much easier. When a supercharger is installed on an engine, it can be bolted to the top or side of the engine, greatly simplifying the installation process. As a result, it will be cheaper to install and easier to service and maintain.

Normal Shutdown Procedures

When an engine has a turbocharger installed on it, the shutdown process becomes quite complex. For example, since a turbocharger is lubricated by engine oil, it must be allowed to idle for 30-60 seconds to allow the lubricating oil a chance to cool off. However, this is not the case with a supercharger. Since it does not rely on engine oil for performance, no out of the ordinary shutdown procedures are required. However, to make sure your Corvette’s engine stays in excellent shape, always try to let your vehicle’s engine warm up for a minute or two before heading down the road, since a Corvette engine that contains a supercharger will operate best when allowed to start out at normal operating temperatures.

No Lag Time

Finally and perhaps best of all, a Corvette engine supplied with a supercharger will experience no lag time. Therefore, once you are going down the highway and press down on the gas pedal, you will get an instant boost of horsepower from your Corvette’s engine. Unlike turbochargers that experience lag time due to having to wait for exhausted gases to drive the turbine, superchargers have no lag time because they rely only on the crankshaft. Yet remember that when selecting the type of supercharger for your Corvette, it is important to remember to decide whether you want one that functions best at lower RPM or higher RPM. If you want more power at higher RPM, it is best to use a centrifugal supercharger. However, if you would rather have more power at lower RPM, it will be better to use roots and twin-screws superchargers.
